A flake floor is built by broadcasting coloured vinyl chips into a wet pigmented body coat, letting it cure, scraping and vacuuming the excess, then locking the whole surface under a clear topcoat. A metallic floor replaces the chips with metallic pigment dispersed in clear resin, which is then worked on the floor to produce movement and depth. Installed, flake systems run roughly $6 to $12 per square foot and metallic roughly $12 to $20.
Both are decorative. Neither is a substitute for the prep underneath, and in this market the choice between them often comes down to how much repair the slab needed.
Flake Density and Chip Size Are the Two Real Decisions
Homeowners are usually shown a colour board and asked to pick a blend. The two decisions that actually change the floor come before that.
Density. A partial broadcast, sometimes sold as a light or designer broadcast, uses noticeably less flake and lets the base colour read through. It is cheaper, it is thinner, and on a Bismarck slab where the drip zone has been ground out and patched it will telegraph those patches as flat areas. A full broadcast to refusal buries the base coat completely and takes the repair with it. On any slab that needed real spall repair, full broadcast is the honest specification.
Chip size. Quarter inch chips give the most texture and the chunkiest look. Sixteenth inch chips give a fine, stone-like surface that sweeps clean easily. Eighth inch sits between and is what most residential garages get. In a garage that has snow melting off a vehicle from November through March, the texture question is a safety question, not a styling one.

Whatever the sheen, if the topcoat is a straight clear with no aggregate it will be slick with wet boots. Flake supplies its own texture. For solid colour and metallic floors we add a polymer or aluminium oxide aggregate into the topcoat, and in Bismarck we recommend it rather than offer it.
